Reasons For Hair Loss

Causes And Reasons For Hair Loss

Hair loss or alopecia, can occur for various reasons. Hormone levels, genetics, environment, and stress are all causes for hair loss. An enormous amount of advanced scientific and medical research is spent every year to find a cure to hair loss. Men and women experience hair loss differently and hair loss can vary between family members. While much the scientific developments have advanced the study and solutions for alopecia, a definite 100% genetic treatment is not available. There are different types of hair loss, hormonal (most common and most studied cause for hair loss) and disease/physical/chemical causes of hair loss.

The most common reason for hair loss in men is a build up of Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the hair follicle roots. DHT is a converted by product of testosterone and has been shown to reduce viable hair follicles, and over time causing them to be lost. Typically males experience hair loss in their 20’s with some men not experiencing it until after 60.

The most common reason for women hair loss is more complex. Women’s hair loss is thought to be more directly hormonal and work through a different mechanism than DHT build up.

Other causes of hair loss include UV exposure, Physical Stress (Pulling hair out), Infections, Skin Conditions, and even stress. Hair loss treatments are available and there is hope one day to have a genetic solution, although it is likely to be far into the future.
